A new regional effort is taking shape to strengthen growth and opportunity across Northeast Minnesota.
Leaders say the initiative—guided by the Aspen Institute “Thrive Rural Framework” and in partnership with Northspan Group—is moving from research into action.
After a year of study and community listening sessions, organizers have identified seven key focus areas, including housing, leadership development, and improving local information systems. Now, they’re encouraging community members, business leaders, and local officials to take part in upcoming action sessions in May and June.
The goal is to bring new voices to the table, spark collaboration, and identify what’s working—and what’s missing—in communities across the region.
More information, including registration and the full regional report, is available through Northspan’s website.

Ducks Unlimited is set to host its annual conservation banquet this Saturday in Fort Frances, with organizers saying the event is nearly sold out.
The evening at the La Place Rendezvous will feature dinner, raffles, and both live and silent auctions—all supporting conservation projects across the Rainy River District.
Chairperson Nancy Steinberg says turnout has been strong heading into the weekend.

Doors open at 5:30, with dinner served at 7:00. Organizers are also still accepting donations and encouraging community members to get involved in supporting local conservation efforts.
