Mahnomen School Board Discusses Next Step After Failed Building Referendum

Mahnomen, MN — The Mahnomen School Board held their regular monthly meeting on Monday night, February 15th where they canvassed the results of last week’s special election, which saw a $4.5 million building referendum fail at the hands of a 99-99 tie. Mahnomen Superintendent Jeff Bisek says it was a very unique situation for a referendum to end in a tie, but it proves that when it comes to elections, every vote matters.

The $4.5 million referendum was part of an overall $16.7 million facilities update plan. Going forward, the Mahnomen School Board will have to decide if they should try again with another referendum vote during the fall election or consider moving forward with a more efficient, trimmed down facilities plan.

In other news from this week’s Mahnomen School Board meeting, Superintendent Bisek says they accepted a quote for some asbestos tile removal.

And Bisek was pleased to report that COVID cases in the district appear to have dropped dramatically in recent weeks.

The Mahnomen School Board also accepted the resignation of Early Childhood Special Educator Instructor Renae Godke and approved the hiring of Douglas Moe.
